We often praise fashion brand Coco Chanel for releasing the first Breton, or Nautical, top for women’s wear overlooking the fact that fishermen were the true fashion trend-setters. They had to be French, of course.
Since the beginning of time, our sailors from northern France have sported Breton tees as they caught large aquatic mammals and defeated ocean tides.
This seawater staple has sailed into women’s closets, including into those who we watch on television and consider style icons.
The fictitious fashion-obsessed character Carrie Bradshaw from the HBO series “Sex and the City” parades through New York for seven seasons wearing nautical tops. Prominent women, like actress Audrey Hepburn, designer Ashley Olsen and Duchess Kate Middleton, have rocked these shirts with denim or topped with a blazer for a formal appearance.
It’s no wonder why the Breton top was nicknamed “The shirt that rarely goes out of style” by Wall Street Journal.
We, at Affinitas, can’t get enough of these stripes! We can wear them any day of the week with black slacks- or denim skirts for casual Friday. Breton tops come in all sorts of colored stripes, but are most commonly found in black or navy blue.
Here are some of our favorite bras from Affinitas and Parfait that compliment the nautical shirts best. Just because we’ve adopted a seaman’s choice of tee doesn’t mean we need to look like we’ve been lost at sea, after all.
