how to make bra band tighter without sewing

Did you know that 85-90% of a bra’s support comes from the bra band? It’s true.

The majority of a bra’s support comes from the band – and not the straps and cups like we often believe. Because of this, you need a snug, supportive band that stays in place for the best fit. Without a snug band, the bra is more likely to move and you’ll have to adjust it frequently throughout the day.

There are a number of things you can do to make your bra fit better. Tightening the bra band is the first thing you should do when you feel like you’re losing support. By fastening the bra on a different hook, you can change the fit of the bra band in minutes.

If your bra band feels too loose, here’s how to make it tighter:

First, determine if you need a new bra

Are you trying to fix an old bra that has seen better days? We all have a favorite bra that we can’t bear to part with, but sometimes it’s best to toss it and replace it with a new one. You need a new bra if: the bra band is stretched out, the gaps are wrinkled or gapping, the bra is too small, the bra is too big, the straps are stretched out, the underwire is coming out of the bra, the fabric is pilling, the bra doesn’t fit anymore, or if the bra is stained, damaged, or in rough shape.

Try fastening it on a different hook

Wearing your bra on the loosest bra hook? It might be time to move it to the middle or innermost bra hooks for a snugger fit. Of course, this won’t solve the problem if the band is a size too big, but it can make the bra band fit slightly smaller and feel a little bit more supportive.

Opt for your bra sister size

Your bra sister size includes two bra sizes with the closest cup volume to your regular bra size. Remember, your bra size is more of a guide than a set rule, so you may need to start with your regular bra size and try on a few different bra sizes to get the perfect fit.

Have a tailor take in your bra band

Some lingerie boutiques and stores like Nordstrom offer bra alteration services, so it’s worth checking them out. A tailor can shorten the bra band so you can start the bra on the loosest hook (which will make the bra last longer than starting it on the tightest hook after purchase.)

If your bra is damaged beyond repair, it’s better to start fresh. The bra fitters at your local lingerie boutique can help you shop for new bras (and maybe even find a comparable replacement for your old one if you want!)

In short, a loose bra band will only let you down. Why not visit a local lingerie boutique and get it all sorted out?
